Career and principal bands

Matos began performing as a teenager and rose to prominence through several high-profile groups. He first attracted attention with Viper, a Brazilian metal band that released early albums establishing the country's metal movement. He later co-founded Angra, whose blend of power metal, progressive structures and Brazilian rhythms brought international recognition. After leaving Angra he formed Shaman (also spelled Shaaman in some releases) and later participated in the multinational supergroup Symfonia. He also recorded and performed as a solo artist and bandleader.

His background in classical music informed his harmonic choices and orchestral touches within metal settings, helping popularize a more symphonic and progressive direction in the genre. Critics and fellow musicians frequently cited his sense of melody, phrasing and dramatic delivery as distinguishing traits.
