Gideon Patt — Israeli politician (1933–2020)

Early life and political entry

Patt grew up in Jerusalem and came of age in the early decades of the Israeli state. He entered national politics and secured a seat in parliament in 1970. Over the following decades he became a steady presence in the legislature, participating in lawmaking, committee work and party organization. His membership in the Knesset spanned topics ranging from economic policy to infrastructure and tourism promotion.

Parliamentary career and party affiliation

From 1970 until 1996 Patt served continuously as a Knesset member. During this time he was part of Israel's center-right political current and a member of the alliance commonly identified as Likud. His parliamentary work overlapped with major events in Israeli politics and with debates on economic policy, security and social development.

Ministerial offices

Patt held several cabinet-level responsibilities. His principal posts included:

• Minister of Industry (1979–1984)
• Minister of Tourism (briefly in 1981, and again from 1988–1992)

As Minister of Industry he was involved in matters related to industrial strategy, manufacturing and commercial policy. As Minister of Tourism he oversaw efforts to promote Israel as a destination and to support the tourism sector, a key component of the country's economy and international image.

Legacy and later life

Patt's multi-decade career in the Knesset and his time in cabinet reflect the role of experienced legislators in shaping mid- to late-20th-century Israeli governance. He is remembered as a steady party figure who moved between parliamentary and executive responsibilities, contributing to policy debates on industry and tourism during periods of economic adjustment.
