Fra' Giacomo dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto (9 December 1944 – 29 April 2020) was an Italian nobleman and professed member of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta. He is commonly identified as the 80th Prince and Grand Master of the Order, having exercised the Order's highest office in 2008 and again from 2017 until his death. His full ceremonial style included traditional honorifics reflecting the Order's history and religious character.

Life and formation

Dalla Torre was born in Rome. He entered the religious and chivalric life of the Order, which combines monastic religious vows with a mission of medical, social and humanitarian service. Over many years he held roles within the Order's institutions and governance, acquiring experience in its spiritual, charitable and diplomatic activities.

Role as Grand Master

As Prince and Grand Master, Fra' Giacomo led a sovereign lay religious order that maintains diplomatic relations with states, operates medical and relief programs worldwide, and preserves a centuries-old chivalric tradition. The Grand Master serves both as the spiritual head of professed knights and as the Order's sovereign head, responsible for guiding policy, representing the Order internationally and overseeing its humanitarian work.
