History and development

The Order traces its origin to a hospital for pilgrims in Jerusalem around 1048. Over centuries it became militarized to protect Christian pilgrims and territories, governing Rhodes from the early 14th century and, after 1530, the island of Malta until its loss to Napoleon in 1798.
