Gaza Province is a southern province of Mozambique with capital Xai-Xai. It includes the lower Limpopo basin, important national parks, agricultural plains and coastal wetlands.
Overview
Gaza is one of the provinces of Mozambique, located in the southern part of the country. Its administrative centre and largest city is Xai-Xai. The province was established in its modern administrative form on October 20, 1954, and takes its name from a historic regional polity that once dominated parts of the area.

Much of Gaza Province lies in the lower basin of the Limpopo River, which flows across the province and discharges into the Indian Ocean near Xai-Xai. The river network shapes floodplains, seasonal wetlands and fertile alluvial soils. The Changane River delineates parts of the province's eastern edge, while the Save River largely marks the northern limit. Coastal stretches combine sandy beaches, lagoons and mangrove-lined estuaries.
Landscape, climate and ecosystems
The province presents a transition from coastal lowlands to inland plains. Climate ranges from tropical along the coast to semi-arid in some interior parts, with a pronounced rainy season that influences agricultural cycles and river flows. Natural habitats include dry woodland, riverine forest, wetland systems and protected savanna tracts.
Protected areas and conservation
Gaza contains significant conservation areas, notably Limpopo National Park and Banhine National Park. These parks form part of wider conservation initiatives linking transfrontier ecosystems and provide habitat for large mammals, migratory birds and endemic species. Protected zones also contribute to eco-tourism opportunities and to efforts to balance wildlife protection with local livelihoods.
Economy and human activities
Agriculture remains a central component of the provincial economy: floodplain cultivation, irrigated schemes and smallholder farming produce staples and cash crops. Fishing and coastal resource use support coastal communities, and tourism centered on wildlife and beaches is a growing sector. Infrastructure and services are concentrated around Xai-Xai and a few market towns.
History and challenges
The province's name recalls historical states and movements in the region during the 19th century. In recent decades Gaza has faced environmental and development challenges, including periodic floods and droughts that affect food security, as well as the need for investment in roads, water management and resilient agriculture. Conservation, sustainable tourism and basin-wide river management are important themes for its future development.
