Gävleborg County (Swedish: Gävleborgs län) is an administrative county in the northern part of Sweden. The county’s seat and largest city is Gävle. The county was created in 1762.

Overview

Gävleborg County covers coastal areas along the Gulf of Bothnia and extends inland to forested and agricultural regions. It includes the historical provinces of Gästrikland and Hälsingland. The county combines urban centres, smaller towns and large rural tracts, and its economy blends manufacturing, forestry, services and maritime activities.

Administration

The county is governed through a County Administrative Board responsible for national government matters at the regional level and a regional council (region) that handles health care and public transport. The county seat in Gävle houses the principal offices of these authorities.

Municipalities

Gävleborg County is divided into ten municipalities. These provide local services such as schools, social care and planning:

  • Gävle
  • Sandviken
  • Hofors
  • Ockelbo
  • Ovanåker
  • Bollnäs
  • Hudiksvall
  • Söderhamn

History and identity

The county was established in the 18th century and has since developed a regional identity shaped by both coastal trading towns and inland farming and forest communities. Cultural traditions from Gästrikland and Hälsingland remain important parts of local life.
