Gary Kurtz — American film producer

Producer Gary Kurtz (1940–2018) was a key figure behind American Graffiti, Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back; later projects included The Dark Crystal and Return to Oz. He lived and worked in the US and UK.

Gary Douglas Kurtz (born July 27, 1940 — died September 23, 2018) was an American film producer whose work in the 1970s and 1980s helped shape contemporary mainstream cinema. He is best known for collaborating with directors such as George Lucas and Jim Henson on commercially successful and artistically influential motion pictures.

Career and style

Kurtz began producing films in the early 1970s and established a reputation for focusing on story and character while managing the practical demands of large productions. He produced the coming-of-age ensemble American Graffiti (1973) and played a central producing role on the original Star Wars (1977) and its darker sequel, The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Later in the 1980s he moved toward imaginative family and fantasy projects, producing Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal (1982) and the fantasy Return to Oz (1985).

Personal life

Kurtz was born in Los Angeles, California. He was married more than once, had three children, and later married Clare Gabriel in 2003. Accounts of his life describe a producer who balanced creative concerns with the commercial realities of big filmmaking, and who ultimately spent much of his later life in the United Kingdom.

Legacy and later years

Though he stepped away from the Lucasfilm team before the final film in the original trilogy, Kurtz's early collaborations influenced the way studios balanced spectacle, character, and franchise potential. His work with puppetry and fantasy on projects such as The Dark Crystal demonstrated an interest in blending technical innovation with storytelling. Kurtz died of cancer in North London in 2018 at age 78.
