Gairo is a small town and comune in the eastern-central part of the island of Sardinia, administratively within the Province of Nuoro. The settlement, commonly referred to simply as Gairo, lies in a hilly, inland landscape of central-eastern Sardinia and is part of the nation of Italy. As recorded in 2016, the population was about 1,444 residents, the municipal territory covers roughly 77.49 km², and the town stands at approximately 670 metres above sea level.
Geography and character
Gairo occupies a mountain-adjacent zone where Mediterranean influences meet higher-altitude conditions. The terrain around the town is composed of valleys and steep slopes, with rural roads linking hamlets and pastureland. Its elevation gives cooler winters than coastal Sardinia and a landscape shaped by grazing, small-scale agriculture and woodland patches.
History and notable features
The modern town developed in response to both traditional rural life and 20th-century events. An older settlement, often called the "old village" (Gairo Vecchio), was partly abandoned following serious geological instability during the mid-20th century; its ruins remain visible and are visited for their evocative atmosphere. The relics of the older community and the pattern of settlement shifts are among the locality's best-known historical features.
Economy, culture and visitors
The local economy is typical of inland Sardinian communes: pastoralism, small farms, artisanal activities and services for residents. Cultural life emphasizes Sardinian traditions, local festivals and religious observances. Rural and heritage tourism has grown modestly as visitors come to see the old village, enjoy hiking, and experience local cuisine.
