Career and clubs

Cherenkov spent the bulk of his club career with Spartak Moscow, representing them across two long spells (1977–1990 and 1991–1994). Between those periods he had a short season with Red Star Football Club (1990–1991) before returning to Spartak to finish his playing days. His loyalty to Spartak and influence on its attacking play made him a fan favourite and a central figure in the team for more than a decade.

International play

At international level Cherenkov made 34 appearances for the USSR national team, scoring 12 goals. While national team selection and tournament involvement varied over his career, his record reflects a strong goal return for a midfield creator and underlines his importance to Soviet football in his era.

Playing style and reputation

He was widely respected for technical skill rather than physical power: tight close control, an eye for incisive passes and the ability to unlock defences with sudden changes of pace.
