Fusio is a small mountain village formerly organized as an independent municipality in the district of Vallemaggia in the canton of Ticino. It lies within the Italian-speaking region of southern Ticino, in the country of Switzerland. The settlement occupies a high valley location at approximately 46.433°N, 8.650°E and is traditionally associated with alpine farming, chestnut woodlands and pastoral landscapes.
Geography and built character
Fusio sits above the valley floor in the upper reaches of the Val Lavizzara, a side valley of the Vallemaggia. The hamlet is typical of mountain villages in the region: clustered stone and wood houses, narrow lanes and small terraces carved into the steep slopes. Surrounding terrain is forested and rises to alpine pastures and peaks that are popular with walkers and hikers in summer. Access is by mountain road from lower valley settlements.
History and administration
The settlement has roots as a rural alpine community whose economy historically combined subsistence farming, seasonal pasture use and migration to urban centres for work. In 2004 Fusio ceased to be an independent municipality when it was merged with neighboring communes including Broglio and Brontallo (Brontallo), Menzonio, Peccia (Peccia) and Prato-Sornico to form the larger municipal entity of Lavizzara. This administrative consolidation reflected wider trends in Swiss mountain regions to pool services and governance for small, dispersed populations.
Culture, economy and visiting
Today Fusio is valued for its quiet character, traditional architecture and access to mountain walking routes. Local features often include a small parish church or chapel, terraced fields, and remnants of traditional stonework. Economic activity now mixes a handful of year-round residents with seasonal tourism and commuting to valley towns. The village is a starting point for hikes and for experiencing rural Ticino cultural landscape.
