Design and symbolism

The two blue stripes represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea that border Nicaragua, and the white band stands for peace and purity. The coat of arms inside an equilateral triangle shows a rising rainbow, a liberty cap, and five volcanoes; together these elements signify liberty, hope, and the union of the five historical Central American states. The triangle itself is traditionally associated with equality.

History and development

The blue–white–blue pattern dates to the era of the Central American federation in the early 1800s and has been readopted in various forms by successor states. The contemporary national flag, incorporating Nicaragua’s specific coat of arms, was formalized in the 20th century and is commonly cited as being established in 1971 in its present legal form.
