Overview

The national flag of Ecuador is a horizontal tricolor of yellow, blue and red with a central coat of arms on official versions. The basic palette and arrangement trace to the early republican period in northern South America; the flag in its modern form was established in September 1860 and remains an important national emblem. For further reference see official and historical notes.

Design and symbolism

The flag's three bands are arranged horizontally with yellow at the top, blue in the middle and red at the bottom. The yellow band is commonly shown as twice the height of each of the other two bands, giving a distinct visual balance. The state and war flags include the national coat of arms centered on the yellow and blue stripes. Traditional interpretations associate yellow with the nation’s resources and fertility, blue with the sky and sea, and red with the blood shed for independence.

Coat of arms and elements

The coat of arms placed on the official flag contains several recognizable motifs: a condor above a shield, a landscape with a mountain and a river, and a depiction of a steamer on water. These elements symbolize protection, the Andean landscape, the nation’s waterways and its historical development. The coat of arms is omitted on many civilian uses, resulting in a plain tricolor flag used in everyday contexts.

History and development

The colors derive from the tricolor first used by leaders of regional independence movements in the early 19th century. They were adopted in different arrangements by successor states after the dissolution of Gran Colombia. Ecuador’s present tricolor arrangement and the inclusion of the coat of arms evolved through the 19th century, with the arrangement formalized in 1860 and later refinements to the emblem and proportions.

Usage, variants and notable distinctions

  • Official/state flag: tricolor with the coat of arms centered; used by government institutions.
  • Civil flag: plain tricolor without the coat of arms, flown by citizens and businesses.
  • Military and naval variants exist with additional emblems for specific services.

Although Ecuador’s colors are shared with Colombia and Venezuela, the combination of stripe proportions and the presence of the coat of arms make Ecuador’s flag visually distinct.
