Life and career

El-Abnudi was born in the Nile Valley region of the country, in Qena Governorate. Over a long career he produced collections of verse and worked in different genres; in his later years he also prepared material aimed at young readers and worked on children's books. He was married to documentary director Attiyat El Abnoudy, later married Nehal Kamal, and was father to two daughters, Nour and Aya. El-Abnudi died on 21 April 2015 after suffering complications related to brain surgery, at the age of 76.

Style and themes

El-Abnudi belonged to a generation of Egyptian writers who deliberately used the Egyptian dialect rather than exclusively composing in Standard Arabic. Writing in the vernacular allowed him to capture rhythms of speech, regional expressions and the texture of rural and urban life. His poetry often adopts plain diction, storytelling forms and imagery drawn from everyday scenes, which made it appealing to readers and performers outside academic circles.

Works, adaptations and influence

Although best known for individual poems such as Death on the Asphalt, el-Abnudi's corpus includes shorter lyrics and pieces intended for performance. Some of his poems have been set to music or used in theatrical and media contexts, helping to spread his language and themes more widely. Critics and readers credit him with helping to legitimize vernacular poetry as a vehicle for serious artistic expression and social observation.
