Overview

Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar, commonly abbreviated as FH and sometimes referred to in English as the Hafnarfjörður Gymnastics Club, is a prominent Icelandic sports club based in the town of Hafnarfjörður. Founded in 1928 as a gymnastics association, FH has expanded into a multi-sport organisation that fields teams and athletes across several disciplines. While it retains roots in gymnastics, the club is especially well known for its men's football side, which rose to national prominence in the early 2000s.

History and development

FH began as a local gymnastics club in 1928 and gradually broadened its activities to serve a wider athletic community in Hafnarfjörður. The football section first reached Iceland's top division, the Úrvalsdeild, in 1979. After a period of promotion and relegation through the domestic league system, FH secured a lasting place in the top tier from 2000 onward. The era that followed brought sustained success and greater visibility at both domestic and European levels.

Sports and organisation

The club operates teams and programmes for a range of sports. In addition to football, FH supports sections in:

  • Handball — a traditional Icelandic sport in which FH competes at regional and national levels (handball).
  • Track and field — athletics programmes for youth and senior competitors.
  • Fencing — a less widespread but active section within the club (fencing).
  • Gymnastics — the founding sport, which continues as part of the club's community offerings.

Achievements

FH's men's football team became one of Iceland's leading sides in the 2000s. The club won its first Úrvalsdeild championship in 2004 and added further league titles in subsequent years, including a championship in 2015. Over the span of its most successful period the team accumulated multiple domestic trophies and made several appearances in European club competitions, reflecting its stature in Icelandic football.

  • Úrvalsdeild (Icelandic top division): first title in 2004; multiple championships including 2015.
  • Icelandic Cup: won on more than one occasion.
  • Icelandic League Cup and Super Cup: multiple victories during the club's successful decades.

Community role and identity

Beyond competitive results, FH plays a significant role in local sport development, offering youth coaching, community events and facilities that support participation across ages. The club's colours — traditionally white and black — are commonly seen at its matches and events, symbolising FH's identity within Hafnarfjörður. Its multi-sport structure and long history make FH an important institution in the town's sporting life.

Notable facts

FH's rise from a gymnastics club to a multi-sport organisation with a successful football department illustrates a common pattern in Icelandic sport, where local clubs often grow to support several disciplines. The club's domestic success has also enabled it to represent Iceland in European competitions, giving players and supporters exposure beyond the national stage.
