Geography and natural features

Much of the county lies within the Driftless Area, a region that escaped glaciation in the last Ice Age and consequently retains steep hills, deep stream valleys and karst terrain with springs and caves. Numerous small streams feed larger rivers such as the Root River and its tributaries, creating habitat for coldwater fisheries and supporting recreation like trout fishing and paddling.

History and development

The county developed in the mid-19th century during westward settlement of the Upper Midwest. It was named for Millard Fillmore, the 13th president of the United States. Indigenous peoples, notably Dakota groups, lived in the region before Euro-American settlement; later waves of settlers established farms, small towns and local institutions that remain the county’s backbone.

Fillmore County’s economy centers on agriculture, especially family farms raising crops and livestock, together with service businesses in small towns.
