Overview

Brazilian football fans remember Fernando Lúcio da Costa, widely known as Fernandão, for his leadership on the pitch and his role in one of Brazil's most successful club sides of the 2000s. A professional footballer who played as a striker from the mid-1990s until 2011, Fernandão combined physical presence with an ability to influence big matches. He was born in Goiânia, in the state of Goiás, and started his career locally before moving abroad and later returning to become a club icon.

Club career and development

Fernandão began his senior career at his home-state club and established himself sufficiently to attract attention from Europe. He had a spell in France, where he signed for Olympique de Marseille and was loaned for a time to Toulouse. After returning to Brazil he joined Sport Club Internacional, where he matured into a leader and captain during the mid-2000s. Later moves included playing in Qatar for Al-Gharafa, a return to Goiás, and a final season with São Paulo before retiring from professional football in 2011.

Playing style and role

As a centre-forward, Fernandão was valued not only for scoring but for his ability to hold play, bring teammates into action and lead by example. He was often the captain on the field, organizing attacks and motivating teammates in crucial fixtures. Although he earned only a single appearance for the senior national team, his club influence—particularly at Internacional—was significant and widely acknowledged by supporters and peers.

Achievements and legacy

  • Key figure and captain during Internacional's most successful period in the mid-2000s, including major continental and international club honours.
  • Remembered for leadership, consistency and performances in decisive matches.
  • Briefly transitioned to management after retirement, taking charge of Internacional for a short spell.

After retiring as a player Fernandão moved into coaching. In 2012 he accepted the managerial role at Internacional, but the tenure lasted only a few months and met with mixed results. He remained a respected figure in the club’s history, frequently recalled by fans for his captaincy and the intensity with which he played.

Death and remembrance

Fernandão died in a tragic accident on 7 June 2014 when a small helicopter crashed in the municipality of Aruanã, in Goiás. He was 36 at the time; the tragedy occurred less than a week before the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He was survived by his wife and their twin children. The loss prompted an outpouring of grief across Brazil and among supporters of the clubs he represented, with tributes emphasizing both his on-field leadership and his role in one of Internacional's golden eras.
