Expediency Discernment Council (Islamic Republic of Iran)

Purpose and functions

When the parliament enacts legislation that the Guardian Council deems incompatible with the constitution or Islamic law, the dispute can be referred to the Expediency Council. The council examines the issue, weighs competing legal and policy arguments, and issues a determination that can make a disputed measure enforceable.
