Overview
Evaz County (Persian: شهرستان اوز) is an administrative division in southern Iran's Fars Province. The county was formed in 2018 from territory that had previously been administered as part of a larger district. It comprises urban and rural communities centered on the town of Evaz and the smaller town of Fishvar.
Geography and population
Evaz County lies within the arid to semi-arid belt typical of much of Fars Province, with hot summers and mild winters. At the time of the 2006 national census, the population of the area that later became Evaz County was recorded as 33,346 people in 6,922 families; more recent figures reflect the administrative change in 2018 and local demographic shifts. Rural settlements surround the principal towns and rely on local water sources and irrigation where available.
Administrative divisions
The county's internal subdivisions include two recognized cities and a set of rural districts (dehestans). Key divisions are:
- City of Evaz — the administrative center and largest settlement.
- City of Fishvar — a smaller urban locality within the county.
- Bid Shahr Rural District — one of the principal rural districts.
- Fishvar Rural District — serving outlying villages around Fishvar.
History and development
Before 2018 the communities making up Evaz County were governed as part of a broader county structure. The elevation to county status reflected administrative reorganization intended to provide more direct local governance and development planning. The towns and villages of the region have older historical roots as market and agricultural settlements within southern Fars.
Economy, language and culture
The local economy is largely based on small-scale agriculture, trade and services supporting rural life. Residents commonly speak regional dialects of southwestern Persian (often grouped with Lari or Achomi variants) alongside standard Persian. Cultural life reflects a mix of provincial Fars traditions, local folk practices and religious observances typical of the region.
Notable facts and distinctions
Evaz County's recent establishment as an independent county is a notable administrative change in Fars Province. Its towns serve as service centers for surrounding villages, and local authorities prioritize improving infrastructure and public services following the reorganization.
