Overview

Eva Anna Paula Braun (6 February 1912 – 30 April 1945) is known as the longtime companion of Adolf Hitler. She spent most of her adult life in private circles close to Nazi leadership rather than in public political roles. Her relationship with Hitler lasted more than a decade and ended when the two married shortly before their deaths in late April 1945.

Early life and meeting Hitler

Braun was born and raised in Munich, Germany. As a young woman she worked as an assistant and photographic retoucher for Heinrich Hoffmann, who was Hitler’s official photographer. Through that employment she met Hitler when she was about 17, and over time their personal connection deepened into a private companionship that remained largely concealed from the German public.

Role and daily life

Eva Braun’s life was primarily domestic. She spent long periods at Hitler’s residences, including the Berghof in Bavaria and, in the final months of the war, the Führerbunker beneath the Reich Chancellery in Berlin. She photographed, organized social events, and kept personal diaries and many amateur photographs that later became important documentary sources. Historians note that she was not a public political actor; however, her proximity to Hitler and senior figures has generated sustained scholarly interest about what she knew or believed regarding Nazi policies.

Marriage and death

In late April 1945, as defeat became inevitable, Hitler and Braun married in the bunker. The following day they committed suicide; Braun took poison, reportedly cyanide, while Hitler killed himself and also used poison. Their bodies were carried into the garden, doused with petrol, and partially burned. The events occurred in Berlin, during the final collapse of the Nazi regime.

Records, discovery and legacy

After World War II Allied forces seized many of Braun’s photographs, personal effects and diary fragments; these documents have been used by researchers and appear in archives and exhibitions. Some materials were destroyed or remain disputed. Eva Braun’s life is often discussed in studies of Nazi inner circles as an example of a close companion whose private world intersected with one of history’s most infamous political leaders.
