Format and participants

Forty-two countries took part in the 2017 contest. As is customary, the host nation and the "Big Five" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) automatically qualified for the final, while the remaining entrants competed in two semi-final rounds to earn a place in the grand final. The competition combined national jury votes with public televoting to determine the outcome.
