Eugène Berger (4 December 1960 – 21 January 2020) was a Luxembourgish educator, mountain climber and public servant. As a long-time member of the Democratic Party, he combined a career in national politics with a public profile shaped by outdoor pursuits and environmental interests. Berger is widely remembered both for his political roles and for becoming the first person from Luxembourg to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Political career and public service

Berger represented his party in the Chamber of Deputies in two periods: he was first elected in 1994 and served until 2004, and he returned to the Chamber in 2007, remaining a deputy until his death in 2020. Between 1999 and 2004 he served as State Secretary of the Environment, a government position focused on environmental policy and administration. In that capacity Berger worked on national and local environmental matters, reflecting his background as an educator and his personal interest in outdoor life.

Mountaineering and national recognition

In 1992 Berger achieved international attention when he became the first Luxembourger to summit Mount Everest. That ascent was a notable milestone for Luxembourg's sporting history and led to his being named Luxembourgian Sportsman of the Year. Berger remained active in mountaineering and used his experience to promote outdoor education and awareness of mountain environments among young people and the general public.

Early life, profession and personal life

Born in Bettembourg in December 1960, Berger trained and worked as a teacher before and during his political career. His professional background in education influenced his political outlook, particularly on youth and community matters. He was a father of two. Colleagues and constituents have described him as someone who bridged practical experience with public responsibilities.

Legacy and notable facts

Berger is remembered for a blend of achievements across disparate fields: public administration, sport and teaching. Key points associated with his life include:

  • First Luxembourger to reach the summit of Mount Everest (1992) and recipient of national sporting recognition.
  • Two non-contiguous periods of service in Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies (1994–2004, 2007–2020).
  • State Secretary of the Environment from 1999 to 2004, a role involving environmental policy work at the national level.

Eugène Berger died on 21 January 2020 at the age of 59. His combination of public service and sporting pioneering has continued to be cited in accounts of modern Luxembourgish public life and in discussions of the country’s participation in international mountaineering.
