Geography and administration

Situated in the Swiss plateau region, the former municipality occupied mainly agricultural terrain and small hamlets rather than dense urban fabric. Municipal affairs were handled by a local council under cantonal law, providing basic services and maintaining communal infrastructure. The coat of arms, local church, and communal meetings played cultural roles common to municipalities in the area.

Characteristics

  • Predominantly rural land use with farming and open fields.
  • Local governance by a small municipal council and assembly.
  • Close links with neighboring villages for schools, markets and services.

History and merger

On 1 July 2011, Eclagnens ceased to exist as an independent commune when it joined with Goumoens-la-Ville and Goumoens-le-Jux to form the new municipality of Goumoëns. This type of municipal consolidation is common in Switzerland and is intended to pool resources, streamline administration and improve public services while preserving local heritage.

Legacy and notable facts

Although no longer an administrative unit, the name and heritage of Eclagnens persist in local memory, historical records and place names. Former municipal boundaries continue to matter for land registry and cultural identity, and the merger is an example of broader regional efforts to adapt local government to modern demands.

Further information

For administrative records, maps and historical references consult cantonal archives and municipal documents. Local history societies and regional guides also record the evolution of Eclagnens from an independent village into part of the larger Goumoëns municipality.
