Eastern Province (Zambia)

Geography and environment

Much of the province falls within the Luangwa catchment and the broad Luangwa Valley, with characteristic miombo woodlands, seasonal floodplains and important river corridors. These habitats support large mammals, birdlife and a mosaic of small-scale farms and protected areas.

History and people

The area has long been home to several Bantu-speaking groups, notably Chewa and Nsenga-speaking communities, whose languages and customs remain prominent. During the colonial era Chipata was known by the name Fort Jameson; after independence it grew as a regional administrative and market centre.

Economy and land use

Agriculture is the backbone of the provincial economy: smallholder cropping and livestock keeping dominate, with staple maize alongside groundnuts, cotton and other cash and food crops. Local markets in Chipata and other towns connect farmers to both national trade routes and cross-border commerce with neighbouring countries.

Tourism and conservation

Eastern Province contains South Luangwa National Park, one of Zambia's premier wildlife areas known for walking safaris and dense wildlife populations. Conservation and tourism bring visitors to the region but also raise ongoing challenges such as balancing community livelihoods and human–wildlife conflict.

Administration and access

Chipata is the provincial capital and principal transport hub. Other notable towns include Lundazi, Petauke and Katete. Roads link the province with Lusaka and with crossings into Malawi; Chipata also has a regional airport.
