Death and trial

On October 30, 1982, Dunne was attacked and strangled by her former boyfriend, identified as John Thomas Sweeney, in the driveway of her home in Los Angeles. She fell into a coma after the assault (medical reports at the time described her condition as comatose) and died five days later at the age of 22. The case went to criminal trial; Sweeney was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to a term that resulted in roughly three and a half years in prison.

Legacy

Dunne's death cut short a promising career and provoked public discussion about domestic violence, victim rights, and sentencing in violent crimes. Her role in Poltergeist continues to be cited when reflecting on her brief career, and the case remains a reference point in conversations about legal outcomes in deaths arising from intimate partner violence.
