A dirty bomb, more formally called a radiological dispersal device (RDD), combines a conventional explosive with radioactive material to spread contamination over an area. It is intended to contaminate, injure, and disrupt rather than to produce a nuclear explosion; the explosive component causes the immediate blast and disperses radioactive particles.

Concepts for radiological dispersal have been discussed since the mid-20th century and attracted attention from policymakers and emergency planners because radioactive sources are used widely in industry and medicine. While there are few, if any, confirmed incidents intended to produce large-scale radiological contamination, the possibility drives regulatory controls and preparedness exercises worldwide.

Response, prevention and mitigation

Preparedness emphasizes securing radioactive sources, regulation of materials, detection systems, rapid incident assessment, evacuation or sheltering, decontamination, and long-term remediation.
