Geography and notable features
Dinan occupies a hill above the river Rance, giving the town a sheltered harbour and steep streets that descend to the quay. The town is commonly admired for its defensive walls, narrow cobbled lanes and rows of half-timbered houses. Key landmarks include an imposing set of ramparts, a historic basilica, old merchant houses and the riverside port area.
History and development
Dinan developed as a fortified settlement in the medieval period and served as a local centre of commerce and defense. Over centuries it retained much of its plot pattern and many original façades, which has helped make the town a representative example of Breton urban heritage. The later integration of Léhon brought additional ecclesiastical and monastic remnants to the municipal inventory.
Culture, economy and tourism
Today Dinan's economy combines local services, small-scale commerce and tourism. Visitors are drawn by guided walks on the ramparts, markets, craft shops and seasonal cultural events. The river port is used for leisure boating and riverside cafés, while the medieval centre supports hospitality businesses that showcase regional cuisine and Breton traditions.
