Davison County, South Dakota

History

Organized in 1874, Davison County took its name from Henry C. Davison, an early settler who was among the first non‑Indigenous inhabitants of the area. Settlement accelerated in the late 19th century as transportation routes and agricultural development opened the prairie to homesteaders. Over time the county’s towns grew around market centers, schools and railroad stops that supported grain and livestock businesses.
