Early life and education

Tanrıyar was born in Eleftheroupoli, then part of Greece, to Turkish parents. His place of birth is often noted in biographical summaries as Eleftheroupoli. He pursued higher education in Istanbul, attending Istanbul University, where many Turkish public servants and professionals of his generation trained. Political career

His ministerial term took place during the early years of the Motherland Party government led by his relative, Turgut Özal, who himself served as President and had previously been Prime Minister of Turkey.

After leaving ministerial office, Tanrıyar became involved in sports administration and was elected president of Galatasaray S.K., one of Turkey's most storied multi-sport clubs, serving from March 1986 until March 1990. As club president he presided over organizational and sporting matters, representing the institution in national and international contexts and guiding its civilian leadership during a competitive period for Turkish football and other sports.

Later life and legacy

Tanrıyar remained a respected elder statesman and figure in Turkish public life. He was noted both for his administrative roles and for his long life; he died in Istanbul on 25 May 2017 at the age of 103. His career is often recalled in two spheres: national politics, where he occupied a key interior portfolio during a transitional era, and sports administration, where he led a major club.
