Overview
David Edmund Talbot Garman (9 May 1922 – 4 January 2019) was a British inventor and businessman credited with developing one of the first commercially successful portable powered bath lifts. Often described as a practical innovator in assistive technology, he founded and chaired several companies that manufactured lifting and bathing aids. Garman was born in Thakeham, West Sussex, England and later lived and worked in Wales, where he died aged 96.
Invention and impact
In 1981 Garman introduced a portable powered bath lift designed to help people with mobility limitations enter and exit a bathtub more safely and with greater independence. This device addressed a common daily challenge for older adults and those with disabilities, reducing the need for full physical assistance and lowering the risk of falls. The design concept influenced later developments in domestic and clinical lifting equipment and contributed to wider awareness of accessible bathroom solutions.
Career and companies
Garman established and led Mangar International Limited and related firms such as Mangar International (Holdings) Limited and Mangar 2013 Limited. Under his stewardship the companies produced a range of inflatable and powered lifting devices used in homes, care settings and emergency services. His approach combined straightforward mechanical ideas with attention to user safety and portability, aiming to make assistive technology practical and affordable.
Recognition and legacy
Garman was appointed an OBE in recognition of his contributions to industry and assistive equipment. Observers note that his work helped shift thinking about how simple inventions can deliver meaningful independence for users and relieve workload for carers and professionals. His products remain referenced in discussions of the history of mobility aids and accessible design.
