Daniel Azulay (May 30, 1947 – March 27, 2020) was a Brazilian visual artist, comic-book creator and educator. He became widely known for imaginative projects aimed at children and families, blending simple graphic techniques with step-by-step instruction. Azulay's career brought his drawing methods and characters to newspapers, print publications and digital courses.
Early work and notable creations
Azulay began publishing professionally in the late 1960s. In 1968 he launched the newspaper strip Capitão Cipó, which appeared in major Brazilian papers and contributed to his reputation as a popular comic book artist. Later, in 1975, he introduced the franchise Turma do Lambe-Lambe, a series of characters and activities designed to engage children with creative drawing and easy crafts.
Approach, media and projects
His work was characterized by clear line drawings, accessible instruction and an emphasis on play. Azulay developed materials for classroom use, family workshops and public demonstrations. In 2013 he launched the Diboo online drawing platform, an educational website that presented guided lessons and animated resources for children and teachers.
- Capitão Cipó — early newspaper strip (1968).
- Turma do Lambe-Lambe — children's franchise and drawing activities (from 1975).
- Diboo — online drawing course and learning portal launched in 2013.
Azulay's practice crossed formats: print strips, illustrated manuals and digital classes. He favored practical instruction that demystified drawing, encouraging repetition, observation and improvisation with simple materials. His materials were used by parents and educators seeking hands-on art activities for young learners.
Born and based in Rio de Janeiro, Azulay remained active in Brazil's cultural and educational circles for decades. His combination of entertainment and pedagogy made him a recognizable figure in children's creative education and illustration.
Daniel Azulay died on March 27, 2020, in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 72. Reports indicate he contracted COVID-19 and had recently been hospitalized while also receiving treatment for leukemia. His books, drawing guides and the Diboo platform continue to be referenced by teachers and families interested in simple, methodical approaches to teaching art.
