Dale M. Cochran (1928–2018)

Legislative career

Cochran was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1965 and served continuously until 1987. During that time he rose to party leadership and served as Speaker of the Iowa House from 1975 to 1978. His legislative tenure covered a period of significant change in state government, and he was involved in budget, agriculture, and policy debates that shaped Iowa's response to shifting farm and economic conditions.

State agriculture leadership

After leaving the legislature, Cochran was appointed and then elected as Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture, serving from 1987 until 1998. In that role he administered programs affecting farmers, land use, marketing, and agricultural research. The office coordinates state-level policies with federal programs and works to support farm economies, natural resource conservation, and the state's agricultural markets.
