Cumbel — former municipality in the Surselva valley, Graubünden, Switzerland

Geography and character

Cumbel occupied a typical alpine setting of steep slopes, pastureland and mixed forests. The village environment was characterized by traditional stone and wooden farmhouses, seasonal mountain pastures and routes used for hiking and local travel. The population was small and rural in character; the community shared linguistic and cultural ties with neighbouring Romansh- and German-speaking villages in the valley.

History and municipal reorganisation

During the early 21st century many small Swiss municipalities undertook administrative mergers to improve local services and governance. On 1 January 2013 Cumbel joined with several neighbouring municipalities to create a larger municipal entity. The merger combined the following former communities into the new municipality of Lumnezia:

Economy and culture

The local economy in and around Cumbel historically depended on alpine agriculture, livestock husbandry and forestry, supplemented by small-scale craft and seasonal tourism. Cultural life reflected the multilingual and traditional character of Graubünden: local festivals, church life and mountain customs remained important to residents. The area offers access to hiking paths, scenic viewpoints and heritage typical of the Surselva valleys.

Notable distinctions

Although no longer an independent municipality, Cumbel's identity survives within the larger municipal structure of Lumnezia. Its absorption into a larger administrative unit is an example of the broader trend of municipal consolidation in Switzerland aimed at improving administrative efficiency and local public services.
