Corisco (Mandj) — small island of Equatorial Guinea

Geography and environment

The shoreline includes sandy beaches, mangrove fringes and shallow, sheltered coastal waters. The interior is wooded with tropical vegetation typical of the region. Nearshore waters and mangroves are important for local fisheries, provide nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans, and support seabirds and other wildlife. The island experiences an equatorial climate with warm temperatures year-round and a pronounced rainy season.

History and administration

Corisco has long been inhabited by coastal communities and later became involved in European colonial activity in the Gulf of Guinea. During the colonial era it was administered within the territory known as Spanish Guinea and after independence it became part of the modern state of Equatorial Guinea. Today the island is administered by national authorities and maintains close economic and social ties with nearby mainland settlements.

Population, economy and access

The population is small and dispersed in fishing villages whose livelihoods centre on artisanal fishing, small-scale agriculture and trade with the mainland. Infrastructure is limited: transport to and from the island is generally by boat and services are concentrated in settlement areas. Local languages are used alongside Spanish in administration and daily life.

Conservation and research
