Overview

Clos du Doubs is a municipality in the northwest of Switzerland. Administratively it belongs to the district of Porrentruy in the canton of Jura. The municipal entity was formed through the consolidation of several small villages and hamlets; it lies along the valley of the Doubs River and is roughly 15 kilometres west of Delémont. For reference, the municipal organization and public services are available through the local municipal office (municipality page).

Constituent villages and administration

The modern municipality was created on 1 January 2009 by merging seven former communes. These constituent localities are:

The merger was intended to streamline local administration, pool services and maintain viability for small rural settlements. Each former village retains its local identity and historic buildings while operating under a single municipal council.

Geography and landscape

Clos du Doubs is defined by the Doubs River and its meandering valley. The landscape combines steep riverbanks, wooded slopes and agricultural plateaus typical of the Jura region. The river corridor provides distinctive scenery, opportunities for canoeing and walking, and a network of local trails that attract outdoor visitors during warmer months.

History and cultural features

One of the best-known places in the municipality is Saint-Ursanne, a small town with a preserved medieval centre and ecclesiastical heritage tied to the early medieval monk after whom it is named. Stone bridges, narrow streets and an ancient ecclesiastical ensemble make Saint-Ursanne a focal point for local history. Other villages in Clos du Doubs show traditional Jura rural architecture and historic farmsteads.

Economy, recreation and importance

The local economy is largely rural: agriculture, forestry and small-scale crafts and businesses are important. Tourism focused on nature, heritage and outdoor activities contributes to the local economy. Visitors come for hiking along the Doubs, small cultural events, and to explore the quiet villages that retain traditional character.

Practical notes and distinctions

Clos du Doubs functions as a dispersed municipality that balances the needs of multiple former communes. Its location near the borderland of the Jura and close to regional centres such as Delémont provides access to broader services while preserving a predominantly rural lifestyle.
