Clugin (Romansh: Clugen) was a small municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Located in the valley of the Hinterrhein, it was one of the mountain communities that form the cultural and geographic mosaic of southeastern Switzerland. Administratively it functioned as a municipality until a municipal reorganisation at the start of 2009.
Geography and setting
Clugin sat above the main valley of the Hinterrhein and was closely connected by road and trails to neighbouring villages. Its landscape is typical of the region: steep slopes, alpine meadows, and forests that give way to narrow valley floors. The village belongs to the broader Hinterrhein area (Hinterrhein) within the canton of Graubünden (Graubünden), in the country of Switzerland.
History and municipal change
Historically Clugin was a small, locally focused community whose economy centred on mountain agriculture, pastoralism and local services. On 1 January 2009 the former municipalities of Clugin and Pignia were merged into the neighbouring municipality of Andeer. That change was part of a broader trend in Switzerland toward consolidating small municipalities to improve administrative efficiency and public services.
Character and local life
The village retained features common to mountain settlements in Graubünden: traditional alpine architecture, seasonal grazing, and access for hikers and nature visitors. Linguistically the canton is multilingual and communities in the Hinterrhein valley commonly use German and varieties of Romansh; local customs and festivals reflected this mixed cultural heritage. Tourism, small-scale farming and crafts have been important for maintaining local livelihoods.
Relevance and distinctions
- Example of small Alpine municipality absorbed into a larger administrative entity to streamline services.
- Part of the culturally diverse Graubünden region, illustrating the interaction of German and Romansh traditions.
- Serves as a base for valley hiking and rural tourism in the Hinterrhein area.
