Overview
Epiquerez was a small, rural municipality in the district of Franches-Montagnes in the canton of Jura, in Switzerland. Located in a hilly, forested part of the Jura region, it functioned primarily as an agricultural hamlet with a modest residential population and a landscape shaped by pastures, woodlands and local lanes.
Geography and local economy
The locality occupied typical Jura terrain: rolling plateaus, mixed forests and pastureland. Economic life centred on small-scale farming, dairy production and forestry; many residents historically combined agricultural work with seasonal employment in nearby towns. The surrounding area is valued for quiet rural scenery and outdoor recreation such as walking and nature observation.
History and municipal merger
Epiquerez has roots as a village community in the historic Franches-Montagnes region. Like many small Swiss municipalities, it faced administrative and financial challenges in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. To improve services and reduce overhead, a municipal consolidation took place on 1 January 2009. At that time Epiquerez joined several neighbouring municipalities to create a larger administrative unit, Clos du Doubs.

Culture, architecture and identity
Architecturally the village reflected regional traditions: simple stone and timber farmhouses, barns, and small chapels. Local customs and place names preserved a Jura rural identity even after the administrative merger. Though Epiquerez no longer exists as an independent municipality, its territory and community history continue within the wider municipal structure of Clos du Doubs, contributing to local heritage, land use patterns and communal memory.
Administrative distinction and relevance
The formal change from an independent municipality to part of a larger commune is an example of a wider Swiss trend: consolidation of small municipalities to improve efficiency and public service delivery. For practical purposes administrative records, cadastral references and local planning now fall under the jurisdiction of the new municipal entity, while historical references, genealogies and local storytelling still treat Epiquerez as a distinct place of origin.
