Geography and natural features

Clermont County occupies a mix of rolling hills, riverfront lowlands and wooded corridors. The Ohio River forms much of its southern boundary. Several parks and reservoirs provide outdoor recreation, with boating, fishing and trails popular with residents and visitors. Its proximity to Cincinnati shapes commuting patterns and regional connections.

History and identity

Organized near the end of the 18th century, Clermont County was established as one of Ohio's early counties. Its name comes from French words meaning a "clear" or "bright" hill, reflecting early settlers' impressions of the landscape. The county retains numerous 19th-century buildings and historical sites; it is also known as the birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant in the village of Point Pleasant.

Communities and government

The county government is administered under an elected board and several elected officials who oversee courts, public works and social services. Batavia serves as the seat and administrative hub. Other population centers include small cities, villages and townships that vary from suburban neighborhoods to agricultural communities.

  • Selected communities: Batavia, Milford, Amelia, Loveland (part), New Richmond.
  • Local government resources and services can be found through the county's official portals and offices: county government.

Economically, Clermont County mixes light manufacturing, service industries and agriculture. Its transportation links and parks make it both a commuter area for Cincinnati and a local destination for outdoor recreation. The county balances growth pressures with efforts to preserve scenic and historic places.
