Chvrches (pronounced "churches") are a Scottish synth-pop band formed in Glasgow in 2011. The group consists of Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals, occasional synths), Iain Cook and Martin Doherty (synths, production and backing vocals). They rose quickly from the city's independent music scene to international recognition with a blend of 1980s-inspired synthesizers, vivid pop melodies and layered electronic production.

Their sound is built around bright synthesizer textures, programmed drums, tight pop-song structures and Mayberry's clear, expressive singing. Lyrics often mix personal reflection with broader themes—relationships, identity and social observation—delivered over both propulsive uptempo tracks and more restrained, atmospheric numbers. The band is known for crafting dense electronic arrangements that retain strong hooks and a pop sensibility.

Chvrches released their debut album, The Bones of What You Believe, on 20 September 2013. The record earned widespread critical praise and commercial success, reaching the UK top 10 and No. 12 on the US Billboard 200. It produced singles that introduced the band to a wider audience and was later included on several year-end best-album lists. Their second album, Every Open Eye (2015), consolidated their profile with sharper production and further radio-friendly singles. The third studio album, Love Is Dead, appeared in 2018 and continued their exploration of synth-pop at a larger scale; later work includes Screen Violence (2021).

Chvrches maintain an active touring schedule and have performed at major festivals and venues across Europe and beyond. They began playing live regularly from 2014 onward, bringing studio-detail arrangements to the stage with a mix of live keys, samplers and programmed elements. Critics and fans often note the contrast between the band’s polished electronic production and the immediacy of their live performances.
