Geography and landmarks

One of the county’s defining features is Lake Chicot, an oxbow lake formed by a former channel of the Mississippi. The lake and adjacent wetlands support a variety of fish and waterfowl and are focal points for recreation. Much of the county lies within the Mississippi Delta plain, with flat cropland, bayous and remnant bottomland forests.

History

Chicot County was organized in the early 19th century as Arkansas Territory developed. Its name derives from the nearby Lake Chicot. Settlement and economic patterns were strongly influenced by river transport, plantation agriculture in the 19th century, and later by mechanized farming. Communities such as Lake Village grew around steamboat landings and later rail and highway connections.

Economy and uses

Agriculture remains a mainstay of the local economy—row crops and livestock dominate much of the land use—while fishing, hunting and outdoor tourism contribute to economic activity. Public sites such as Lake Chicot State Park and nearby wildlife management areas attract visitors for birding, boating and camping.
