Overview

Chicago Union Station is the principal passenger-rail terminal in Chicago and one of the city's most recognizable transportation facilities. Opened in 1925, it serves as the primary gateway for intercity rail and as a central terminal for commuter trains. The station occupies a large footprint on the west side of the Chicago River and lies just outside the central business district known as the Loop, within easy walking distance of major downtown destinations.

The complex combines a monumental headhouse and concourse with a largely subterranean network of tracks and platforms. A vaulted, historic concourse often called the Great Hall provides the main public space, ticketing and waiting areas, while platforms are located below street level and extend beneath surrounding blocks. Including approach and storage tracks, the facility covers roughly nine and a half city blocks and is hemmed in by streets and towers; the site reaches to the banks of the Chicago River and is close to high-rise office buildings.

The station replaced an earlier terminal built in 1881 as railroads sought to consolidate multiple downtown termini into a unified union station. The present facility opened in 1925 and was designed in a classically influenced, Beaux-Arts idiom to match the monumental civic architecture of the period. Over the decades it has been adapted to changing travel patterns and technologies while retaining key historic spaces.

Today the station functions as the hub for long-distance passenger trains and regional commuter services. It is a primary stop for national rail services and supports multiple suburban lines that bring commuters into downtown each weekday. The concourse and nearby office floors contain retail, dining, and administrative spaces, and the complex provides intermodal connections to local transit and roadways.

Union Station is notable for the contrast between its grand, above-ground headhouse and the subterranean track system beneath downtown streets.
