Overview

The Chennai Super Kings (commonly abbreviated CSK) are a professional Twenty20 cricket franchise representing Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2008 as one of the original IPL teams, CSK have become one of the tournament's most recognisable sides, often associated with a yellow playing kit, a roaring-lion emblem and a reputation for consistent performances.

Identity and home ground

CSK plays most of its home fixtures at the historic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, commonly called Chepauk (M. A. Chidambaram Stadium). The team’s colours and logo are important parts of its public image: an all‑yellow jersey symbolises its brand, while supporters create a strong atmosphere at home matches. Leadership on the field has been defined by long-serving captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and the side has been coached for many seasons by Stephen Fleming.

History and development

CSK was formed when the IPL began in 2008 and quickly emerged as one of the competition’s leading teams. The franchise enjoyed early success, winning back-to-back IPL championships in 2010 and 2011. In 2015 the club faced a major setback when the Supreme Court‑appointed Lodha Committee suspended the team for two seasons because of alleged involvement by the owners in a betting-related controversy; CSK were absent from the 2016 and 2017 tournaments. The franchise returned to the IPL in 2018 and reclaimed silverware soon after, adding further titles in later seasons.

Achievements and records

  • Multiple IPL championships across different seasons, and two Champions League Twenty20 titles in the early 2010s.
  • Consistent qualification for the playoffs in many editions of the IPL, generating a record of repeated deep runs in the tournament.
  • Several players associated with CSK have topped franchise lists for runs and wickets; among notable contributors are long-time batsman Suresh Raina and frontline spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Key players and playing style

Over the years CSK have fielded a mix of Indian talent and international experience. The team’s style has often emphasised stability in batting, astute finishing, spin-bowling depth suited to South Indian pitches, and calm leadership. Players such as the long-serving captain, top-order scorers and experienced overseas campaigners have defined CSK’s approach to building balanced squads that perform in diverse conditions.

Fan culture, rivalries and legacy

CSK boasts one of the IPL’s most loyal and vocal fan bases, known for their yellow attire and passionate support. The franchise’s rivalry with teams like Mumbai Indians has become one of the marquee contests of the league, attracting high viewership and intense on-field competition. Despite the 2015–2017 suspension setback, CSK’s rapid return to success and continued presence at the top of the league standings have reinforced its status as an influential and enduring brand in Indian cricket.
