Military career and responsibilities

Huxtable's progression followed the pattern of long‑service officers of his generation: regimental and field commands, mixed with staff roles at higher headquarters. As Commander‑in‑Chief, Land Forces, he held one of the British Army's most senior operational appointments, charged with the training, administration and readiness of the army's deployable field forces. His leadership covered a period when NATO and British forces continued to focus on deterrence and preparedness in Europe.

Honours and recognitions

Over his career Huxtable received several state honours that reflected both gallantry and service. In the 1961 Queen's Birthday Honours he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). He was later advanced within the honours system to Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), a senior distinction often awarded to high‑ranking military officers.

Legacy and notability

Huxtable's career illustrates the trajectory of professional British officers who served through the Cold War era: operational experience in limited wars, steady advancement to strategic command, and recognition by the Crown. He retired from active service shortly after completing his term as Commander‑in‑Chief and remained a figure of public record until his death on 26 November 2018 at age 87.
