Career and role

Young rode for the American development team Axeon–Hagens Berman from 2015 until 2017. That team is recognized for preparing younger riders for higher-level professional racing, combining national-level events and international calendar races to build experience. Riders on such squads typically serve in supporting roles in road races, gaining race craft and exposure to a wide range of courses.

Like many professional cyclists, Young came up through regional and national junior programs and national-level races. He was part of a generation of American cyclists who aimed to use strong domestic results and performances in U23 events to earn places on continental and WorldTour teams. His move to Axeon–Hagens Berman placed him among peers and mentors focused on advancing to the next level in the sport.

Accident and death

On April 28, 2017, Young was involved in a crash during the stage race Tour of the Gila. He sustained severe injuries in the incident and was taken to a hospital in Tucson, Arizona, where he later died. He was 21 years old.
