Overview

Chakradhar Gilla, commonly known by his stage name Chakri (15 June 1974 – 15 December 2014), was an Indian music composer and playback singer who made a significant impact on Telugu cinema. He gained recognition for melodic songs that blended contemporary film scoring with regional musical idioms and for performing several of his own numbers.

Career and musical style

Chakri worked primarily in the Telugu film industry, often referred to as Tollywood. His compositions tended to favor clear, hummable melodies and arrangements that supported both romantic ballads and mass-appeal numbers. Reviewers and audiences noted his ability to incorporate elements from local folk traditions alongside modern instrumentation, producing songs that were accessible and widely sung outside the films themselves.

Notable works and recognition

Among his best-known contributions is the song "O Maguva Nee Sneham Kosam," which appeared in the film Satyam (2003). For his work on that film he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer – Telugu, a high-profile acknowledgement of his vocal as well as compositional talent.
