Location and landscape

The mountain lies within the high, arid puna region of the central Andes, characterized by broad plateaus, volcanic cones and sparse human settlement. Conditions at these elevations include thin air, strong solar radiation and large diurnal temperature swings. Permanent glaciers are limited in this sector; seasonal snowfields and small névés are more typical near the summit.

Geology and environment

Cerro Bonete rises from a setting of volcanic and uplifted sedimentary rocks common to this part of the Andes. The geology records episodes of volcanism and tectonic uplift associated with subduction of the Nazca Plate. Vegetation is restricted to specialized puna communities on the lower slopes; animal life is limited and adapted to high altitude conditions.

Documentary sources indicate the mountain had no recorded ascents until at least 1970, making it a later-summited high peak in the region. Since that time it has attracted climbers seeking remote, high-altitude objectives. The name Bonete Chico distinguishes this summit from larger nearby points sometimes referred to as Bonete or Bonete Grande. Because survey data and prominence criteria differ, Cerro Bonete may appear in different positions on lists of the highest Andean peaks.
