Cerniaz (Vaud) — former municipality in Switzerland

Geography and character

Cerniaz lay within the lowland and gently rolling landscape typical of the Broye-Vully area, a part of Vaud shaped by mixed farming and small villages. The settlement pattern was compact, with a village core and surrounding fields. Local roads connected residents to nearby towns and to regional transport routes that serve the canton. The community’s scale and land use made agriculture an important part of everyday life and the local economy.

History and administrative change

Like many small Swiss communes, Cerniaz managed its own municipal affairs for centuries but faced modern pressures such as administrative costs and the demand for efficient public services. To address these challenges it participated in a voluntary merger: on 1 July 2011 Cerniaz combined with Combremont-le-Grand, Combremont-le-Petit, Granges-près-Marnand, Marnand, Sassel, Seigneux and Villars-Bramard to form the new municipality of Valbroye. The consolidation aimed to streamline administration, pool resources, and improve public services.

Economy, culture and local life

Prior to the merger the local economy was dominated by agriculture, with family farms and smallholdings producing cereals, fodder and other regional crops. Village life revolved around communal events, seasonal rhythms and local institutions such as a communal hall or chapel. Although administrative responsibilities moved to Valbroye, many former residents continue to maintain local traditions, associations and neighbourhood ties.

Legacy and current administration

Today Cerniaz exists as a locality within the larger municipal structure of Valbroye. Its territory, land records and civic responsibilities were transferred to the new municipality, which now provides centralized services such as schooling administration, planning and local infrastructure. Maps, postal addresses and statistical records reflect the change, while the place name Cerniaz remains in local usage.
