Granges-près-Marnand

History and merger

Historically Granges-près-Marnand functioned as an independent municipal unit with its own local council and communal responsibilities. On 1 July 2011 it joined eight neighbouring municipalities to form a larger administrative entity. This type of municipal consolidation has been common in Switzerland since the late 20th century, intended to pool resources and streamline local government.

Formation of Valbroye

The new municipality, Valbroye, was created through the union of nine former communes. The partners in the merger were:

Geography and local life

The area is typical of the Broye region: gently rolling fields, mixed farming, and compact village centres. Public services in the former municipality were modest and frequently coordinated with neighbouring communes prior to the merger.

Administration and transport

Residents relied on regional roads and public transport connections typical of the Swiss network to reach larger towns for education, healthcare and commerce. The consolidation into Valbroye aimed to improve administrative efficiency and service provision for inhabitants across the merged territory.

Granges-près-Marnand illustrates the pattern of municipal mergers in modern Switzerland: small, historically independent communes choosing to combine to strengthen governance and share costs. While the name remains in local memory and addresses, most administrative functions now fall under the jurisdiction of Valbroye, within the district of Broye-Vully in the canton of Vaud.
