Geography

The landscape around Carrouge is gently rolling, with small lanes linking farms, hamlets and local pastures. Local land use combined arable fields with pasture and wooded strips that are typical of this part of Vaud. Proximity to larger towns in the canton made commuting and regional ties a feature of daily life for many residents.

History and municipal change

Carrouge shared a common pattern with many small Swiss municipalities: compact local government and a long-standing community identity. On 1 July 2016 the former municipalities of Ferlens, Mézières and Carrouge were merged to create the new municipality of Jorat-Mézières. The merger was undertaken to pool administrative resources, improve service delivery and strengthen planning at a scale that sustained public services.

Economy, services and community life

Before the merger, local economy and daily life revolved around agriculture, small local businesses and services. Municipal responsibilities included local planning, road maintenance, primary schooling and community events. After consolidation these functions have been managed at the larger municipal level, while community associations and local traditions continue to play a role in village life.

Culture and heritage

As with many villages in Vaud, Carrouge preserved elements of regional architecture and rural customs. Local heritage is documented in cantonal and municipal records and is of interest to those studying rural settlement, agricultural history and local governance in Switzerland.
