Overview

Carlos Alberto Vidal Layseca (4 February 1931 – 24 September 2017) was a Peruvian physician and academic known for a brief period in national public service and for later leadership in medical education. He was born in Lima and spent much of his career in the health and university sectors of Peru, combining clinical training with administrative responsibilities.

Public service

Vidal Layseca served as Minister of Health from July 1990 until February 1991 during the first months of the administration of Alberto Fujimori. His tenure at the ministry was short but took place in a politically intense period. As minister, he acted as a senior health official responsible for coordinating public health programs and advising on national health policy.

Academic leadership

After leaving the ministry, Vidal Layseca returned to academic life and was appointed rector of Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, one of Peru's principal medical universities, serving from 1994 to 1999. In that role he oversaw institutional affairs, academic programs and research priorities, and represented the university in national and international forums.

Death and legacy
