Overview

Carlos Ariel Borges (14 January 1932 – 5 February 2014) was a Uruguayan footballer best known for his role as a forward/winger for C.A. Peñarol and the Uruguay national team. He occupies a notable place in South American football history for scoring the first goal ever recorded in the Copa Libertadores tournament.

Playing style and position

Borges operated mainly as a wide attacker, combining speed, close control and a keen eye for goal. Contemporary accounts describe him as a skillful winger who could both create chances with crosses and cut inside to finish. His versatility allowed him to contribute as a scorer and as a supplier for teammates.

Club career and the Copa Libertadores

At club level Borges is most closely associated with C.A. Peñarol, one of Uruguay's leading teams. His name is linked to the opening chapter of continental club competition: during the inaugural Copa Libertadores tournament he scored the competition's first goal, a milestone remembered by supporters across the continent. The Copa Libertadores itself is frequently cited as South America's premier club competition, and Borges' contribution is often referenced in retrospectives about the event's early years.
